While the SAT has gone fully digital, the ACT remains a powerhouse paper-and-pencil option for college-bound students, offering a highly predictable, linear, and distinct testing experience. But it too has changed significantly in recent months. The English, Math and Reading sections all have seen a decrease in the number of test questions-- and a relative increase in the time duration of each section. The Science section now is optional (although a number of college admissions departments may still require it.) In total, the test has become more user-friendly, increasing the time available per question, and reducing the number of choices on each multiple-choice math question from 5 to 4.

Nonetheless, the ACT remains a rapid-fire, high-energy exam that tests straightforward, high-school-level content. Success on this test demands quick decision-making and clear thinking under pressure. For students who eschew the dynamic format of the Digital SAT and those who thrive on momentum, the ACT is the ultimate vehicle to showcase college readiness.

Inside the Exam: Structure and Content

The ACT packs 131 multiple-choice questions into a core test that consumes a little over 2 hours-- though it can extend to almost 3 and a half hours with both optional sections. Unlike the SAT, where the content and dificultly of later questions depends on responses to earlier ones, the ACT is a linear exam—every student sees the same questions; one's performance on a given section never alters the difficulty of the next.

Scores range from 1 to 36 for each of the test's 4 sections, which are then averaged into a single Composite Score.
